[Cate's Nereid Mitts] Only one more left... I have a dilemma. What projects should I bring with me to work on while I’m in London visiting Cate?

Of course, for the plane ride over, I will be working on Cate’s fingerless mitts, which are not yet finished but are dangerously close. I’ve gotten to the point where I need to start making the thumb, and that is the point with every fingerless mitt where I get all grouchy about it and ignore it for awhile.

I’ve been working on these since her visit in September, and I pretty much have no excuse for not finishing them, other than “but I wanted to knit that instead…” which, if you’re me, is a totally valid excuse. But not if you’re Cate.

[Merino Lace Sock] Just started today I’m pretty sure I want to bring a pair of socks to knit while I’m there and for the plane ride back, but I’m knitting two pairs right now and cannot decide which one to bring. I cast on for the Merino Lace Sock from Favorite Socks last night and was able to make quite a dent in the pattern and would like to wear them ASAP. But I need to finish the socks for Boyfriend’s dad to thank him for taking care of our cats (he’s our vet).

And then there are the 4 pairs of socks I’m just dying to cast on for that are in my queue.

But I guess where I really run into the problem is I want to bring my sweater, which is not practical as it is huge.

And my Clapotis - which is not practical, as it involves weighing.

And my Endpaper Mitts, which I honestly don’t think I will ever finish, even though I love the pattern and my color choice.

So I take all of this together, and I realize, what the hell am I thinking?

It’s my vacation in London and Paris, why am I obsessing about knitting? I should be obsessing about all the great things I’m going to get to see and do, not worrying about what knitting I should be taking with me.

And then I start thinking about the 20 hours (round trip) I’ll be spending on a plane, and I realize that I really do need to think about knitting.

So what do I bring? Cate’s mitts, obviously. But I also need to bring something that’s small and portable and can be done in flight, and something that I probably won’t finish - which kind of elimnates socks.

Help!

Um girlie…YOU NEED TO GET A BALL THERE! Europe is where a ton of AMAZING yarns and fibers come from…I would splurge and get yourself something divine! (and if you see anything for me, well, I will gladly pay you for it;P)
If you think the mitts will be done, might I suggest something like a beret? You will be visiting the land where they began!

When I was travelling around Europe this year by train, the only thing I knit on was a simple pair of stockinette socks for my boyfriend, who I was travelling with. My criteria were a) portable b) mindless c) didn’t need a pattern d) made me feel less guilty for my boyfriend carrying all my bags (”Yes, you carry the suitcases, but I’m knitting you socks - all fair.”) What project do you have that best fits those criteria?

Lace? I reckon lace is perfect travel knitting (maximum hours, minimum weight).

I finished two pairs of socks last trip to London. I’d say take both socks and your mitts, promise yourself not to do too much knitting while you’re actually there, and throw in a zanax for good measure. That way, even if you finish all the knitting on the way home, you can sleep. :)

Heh. I totally did this debate when I went to Florida. And I’ll be doing it in a few weeks about going on a cruise. It’s a little harder when I need to make a bunch of small projects rather than one big one, i.e. presents.

You might already have done this but double check with your airline to see if it is okay to take knitting needles on the plane. I know that a few years ago they were on the ‘no fly’ list.
