The cold air was killing my little ears while I was waiting for Amtrak on Tuesday, so I decided I needed to knit Thorpe. I ran out to my LYS and grabbed some Cascade 128 Tweed and got to knitting. I started and finished this hat yesterday. My ears are nice and warm and happy now.
In other happy news, my uterus no longer has to live in fear. Now that Obama is the President elect, I can rest assured that my reproductive rights will be safe once more once he comes into office.
In some very sad news, California is on the verge of passing proposition 8 and banning gay marraige. Fortunately, the ban is not retroactive (as ex post facto laws are illegal in the United States with a few exceptions, namely sex offenders) and the couples who have married since the California Supreme Court’s decision in June will remain married.
My issue with supporters of prop 8 is about more than just the fact that they are anti-gay marriage and hateful of an entire population of people. It’s really about the fact that they live in a country where they demand equalities and freedoms, and aren’t afraid to kick up dust if their freedoms are violated… and yet, they’ve convinced themselves that this one specific group of people isn’t deserving of these rights.
It’s cruel, hateful, and wrong. If you voted yes on prop 8, that qualifies as hate. Denying rights to an entire group of people for no reason is hateful, no matter how you look at it.
However, the Secretary of State’s office will not be releasing an official decision on prop 8 until all of the absentee ballots are counted on December 13th. Here’s hoping that the ballot either does not pass, or is contested successfully in the state Supreme Court, since it does go against the California constitution’s standard of equality for all. Here’s hoping the hateful lose.
For you outsiders who don’t live in California: California is not as liberal as you think it is. The more urban areas are liberal, and are what people associate with California. Fortunately, my county voted 75% against prop 8, so I am proud to live in the area I live in.
In addition to this, it really frustrates me that it only takes a simply majority to pass a proposition that can amend the state constitution.
