Double Leaf Saroyan

by Liz on September 5, 2011

The Double Leaf Saroyan pattern actually came about when I was browsing through projects for Saroyan. I came across Teri’s beautiful version, and she kindly agreed to send me the pattern so I could incorporate it into the original pattern.

Double Leaf Saroyan is free! This pattern is quite a bit more basic than the original version of Saroyan does. If you’re looking for information on customizing your Double Leaf Saroyan, you will need to look at the original version of Saroyan. Information on custom sizing is not included in this pattern.

Double Leaf Saroyan contains charts only (no written instructions) and is meant to serve as a modification to the original pattern rather than a stand-alone pattern. You can download the original Saroyan pattern here.

The sample you see knit here contains set-up leaves, 12 increase chart repeats, 11 decrease chart repeats, and edge leaves. This pattern intentionally uses one less decrease chart repeat to compensate for the edge leaves.

The scarf shown used 2 skeins of Malabrigo Rios.

The edges are mirrored: the cast on edge is a leaf stem, the bind off edge ends with a leaf point.

I had never thought of modifying this pattern but it’s beautiful and so are the photos.

Wow, great idea! Thanks, Liz & Teri, for sharing it.

The new version doesn’t tell how many skeins of 210 yds you used.

Liz September 5, 2011 at 3:07 pm

2 skeins!

Love it. Thanks so much!

I see you have used Malabrigo Rios, could a fingering weight be used also?
I love this scarf, it would be great around the neck when a sweater would be too much.
Thanks for such a great project!

I love the new Saroyan pattern ….BUT….I have no clue how to read a chart. Is there any way to get the directions other than a chart???

very good idea ! so beautiful!

You can use fingering weight, but you’ll need to look at the original Saroyan pattern for instructions on changing yarn weights.

I don’t know if I’m completely missing it, but for this do you just use the 12 increase leaves and the 11 decrease leaf patterns? What are the straight and edge leaves for?

Thanks!

**never knit sick. it just doesn’t turn out**

Liz October 5, 2011 at 5:35 am

As indicated in the pattern, the sample shown has no straight sections. Straight sections are provided if you’d like to use them.

The chart patterns include several half-circles but I don’t see the symbol in the key. What am I missing?

Liz October 8, 2011 at 8:25 am

The updated version of the pattern has the symbol in the chart.

I just love this pattern! I am having a hard time with row 9 on the increase leaves. The description of the 4th,5th and 6th stitches don’t make sense to me. Is there another way to describe the stitch?

I think your patterns are great! Thank you.

Liz, I adore the Saroyan! I knit one recently for my MIL’s birthday, and have 6 skeins of yarn ready to knit 3 more for Christmas gifts. If I understand the double-leaf modification correctly, I’ll basically be knitting the original pattern as written, and then knitting on the directionally-appropriate leaf in place of the garter edge border. Is this right? Thanks for making such gorgeous patterns available for free!

The Edge leaf directions don’t make any sense to me. After row 15 you should have 26 stitches, ( directions for row 11 omitted but assumed to be the same as row 13) but row 16 only has 16 stitches in it decreasing to 12. Then row 17 has 15 stitches decreasing to 11, which is fine for row 18 but then row 19… etc. I can’t find any corrections for this so I’m stuck! What am I missing?

Thanks for the amazing pattern!
Unfortunately, I just seem to be too dumb to understand the “pass st just worked to rhn, p2tog” that shows up in the different charts for the right leaf.
If I work a stitch, isn’t it on the right needle anyway? Help? :)

Polly April 13, 2012 at 8:06 am

I’m having the same trouble with the “pass st just worked to run, p2tog” instruction. Oh do help! This is such a fantastically beautiful pattern. I have a feeling it should be passed to the left so you can then purl it together with the next one? Can you confirm this for me? Very grateful!

Sierra November 15, 2012 at 9:23 pm

I’m having trouble with the decrease chart- are there suppose to be no kfb in the decrease charts? And 15 rows for the chart? Decreasing on rows 1,5&9 Or should I just follow the straight chart and just k2tog between the markers on rows 1,5&11 – thanks!!!!

Sierra November 15, 2012 at 9:49 pm

Never mind! I was following the edge leaves chart instead of the decrease chart- whoops! Great pattern thanks!
