Free sock pattern, woo! (If you’d like to leave a comment from the main blog, click on the post title… still sorting that out.)

Special instructions for the Medium size (70 sts) ARE NOW AVAILABLE. Click here to download the PDF, or go to the blog post.

NEW VERSION! Posted 12:00 AM PST January 21, 2009. The new PDF has correct sizes, the stitch repeat was mis-labeled as 8, rather than 10.

I really like watching Bones. I think it’s a great show, and I love the cast. Temperance “Bones” Brennan is hilarious, and I love her personal sense of style. The weird chunky necklaces, the bold understated colors… the people who pick out her clothes are doing a great job if you ask me.

So I thought to myself, “what kind of knit socks would Bones wear?” It had to be something simple, elegant, and understated. Something that a man or a woman could wear, something that could be dressed up or dressed down. Which, quite frankly, was a tall order. But I think I succeeded in my quest to design the perfect socks for Temperance.

A lattice pattern composed of right and left twists, this sophisticated sock pattern may suit both men and women. With a pattern repeat of only 10 stitches, this sock is easily sized up or down.

Although instructions are provided for a toe-up sock, the lattice pattern is reversible and can easily be switched to create a cuff-down version. The pattern includes 2 sizes.

This sock is knit with two US #1 1/2 (2.5mm) circular needles, but can easily be adapted to your preferred method of knitting in the round.

The yarn pictured is a deep, lovely semi-solid shade of red that my camera can do no justice to. The yarn was dkknits technicolor smoosh toes (75% superwash merino wool, 25% nylon, 450 yds) in the color “Happy Holly Days”, available for purchase at dkknits.etsy.com.

More photos available here.

There are two PDF downloads available. The first is the pattern in its entirety, and the second contains modifications for those wishing to knit the medium size. I have kept them separate because the instructions for the medium size would have muddled up the pattern and made it difficult to read – at least, in my opinion. If it is requested, I will make a combined PDF.

Download: PDF (4.2MB), version 2, released 1/20/2009. Click here. Version 3 released January 21, 2009 @ 12:00AM PST. Sizes updated.

Sorry for the differently colored photos. My camera is not of fan of colors in the red and orange families.

Happy knitting!

I love knitting these socks! Thank you so much for the pattern! I had been trying to come up with a pattern on my own using RT and LT stitches and wasn’t getting the creative flow with it and then your pattern appeared and I was so happy!!
Thanks again!

Wow, and I was thinking I was the only Bones fan anywhere! …Love the idea of patterns for Seely and Angela and all the rest, too, what fun! Thanks so much for a great pattern!

Thanks so much for the splendiferous sock pattern
(Temperance). I’m a beginning sock knitter and was a fan of Tempe in the books before she was Bones.
I don’t answer the phone or the door when Bones is on. That is one of the best shows on TV. (I’m pretty nuts about Monk also.)

Thanks again!

This is so cool!! I am sitting here watching Bones, searching for a sock pattern for a new ball of Opal cotton I just bought Tuesday. Somehow it was just meant to be!!! Thanks for the pattern.

I love the Bones idea–I’m about to start Angela’s shawl (thank you, thank you for the pattern). Can’t wait to see what you do with Hodgins. Or Zack!
