Patterns
I support many open source projects. From software, to ebooks, to independent artists, I do my best to support those who encourage open source projects.
Open source projects are, by their very definition, open and available to all. The concept behind open source is that by the sharing and exchanging of ideas, the projects will become better and better. Users are encouraged to interact with one another in various ways.
In a way, the open source concept lends itself easily to knitting and is already in practice. When you knit the shawl from the latest issue of Knitty, or even the Twist Collective, you often post your modifications and suggestions online. At the very least, you write them down on the pattern or a scrap of paper, or perhaps you file them away mentally. Information is shared, one way or another.
The bulk of my patterns are available for free, those that are not were produced for private clubs, by request, or were more involved than normal.
